Portal 2 system requirements
The follow are the official system requirements (according to Steam):
OS: Windows 7 / Vista / XP
Processor: 3.0 GHz P4, Dual Core 2.0 (or higher) or AMD64X2 (or higher)
Memory: 1GB XP / 2GB Vista
Hard Disk Space: At least 7.6 GB of Space
Video: Video card must be 128 MB or more and should be a DirectX 9-compatible with support for Pixel Shader 2.0b (ATI Radeon X800 or higher / NVIDIA GeForce 7600 or higher / Intel HD Graphics 2000 or higher).
Audio: DirectX 9.0c compatible
OS: MAC OS X 10.6.6 or higher
Processor: Intel Core Duo Processor (2GHz or better)
Memory: 2GB
Hard Disk Space: At least 7.6 GB of Space
Video: ATI Radeon 2400 or higher / NVIDIA 8600M or higher

i hope not becasue i cant barley run call of duty world at war on my pc i have to turn all the graphics down to low or off and put the game resolution to 640x480 just to play it at full speed and thats not even online it laggs online man to play the newer games you really got to have a top of the line computer now a days and the system requirments show above to play portal 2 are just the minnimum system requirments

I have a question, Will portal 2 only be able to be played on the pc with steam? I am a minor and i am not allowed to have steam. so again. I ask, Can I play portal 2 without having a steam account, steam, or steam cloud>

Nothing top of the line about it Bradley, you just have an old computer. The consoles have really inhibited progression to system requirements and with 5 years left in this console generation (according to Microsoft) you will get your moneys worth if you get a new PC now.$500 will buy a computer that can play any of the big title games on maxed settings.

@Matt, i'm minor too, and i have a steam account and a visa credit card, and i bought some games on my steam account, so, tou can have your own steam acc, but you can get the game on disk form a specialised store :D

Keep in mind 3Ghz is for a Pentium 4, so something like a 2Ghz Athlon would be fine. Else any Core 2 dual core processor is fine.

Just for a guideline for other people this works great on my Sempron M100 with an ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4200 and 3 gigs of RAM. Turned down anit-aliasing to 2x and model textures to medium and works at a solid 30 FPS. Sometimes it slows down when GLaDOS is moving a lot of panels around at once.

why does a mac require a far better gpu than windows? windows requires NVidia 7600 or higher, while mac requires the significantly better 8600.

@bolt Macintosh's usually have higher requirements because Mac OS is slower than Windows.Anandtech had some benchmarks with the source engine on the same hardware and Windows had pretty much double the frame rate across the board.

That graphic card is just to old. I guess the cards they demand on the specs are for minimum. Like someone above mentioned if you want to play games on pc you can build a gamers pc for about 500 if you don't want to spend that kind of money just buy a ps3 or an xbox.Greetz.

@bolt and @PaulThe reason that Macs need a more powerful GPU is not because the Mac OS itslef is slower, it's because it cannot use the hardware routines of DirectX (DirectX is a Windows-only thing). Any Unix/Linux based OS is stuck with OpenGL, which is slower. (This is also why it is so hard to find a decent FPS under Linux.)
The good news is that the GPU in a Mac still has DirectX embedded on its silicon. Dual-boot your Mac, and you will not need the stronger GPU while running Windows.

If your pc is 1 year old, you probably have an i3/i5/i7 so it's fine because they are newer than Core2.

Oh for gods sake. Anyone with a normal computer will be able to play Portal 2. My one year old mid end laptop can run it fine. I'm sure any system bought in the last five years will be able to run Portal 2.

You do NOT need a 3.0 GHz processor, guys. I play this at 1024x768, 90FPS average, using an Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz.Also, it doesn't use up much RAM. I actually see firefox using more RAM than this game when I use it. Most of the time Portal 2 has sat around 150 MB of RAM in use.

Agree with above. Ive got a Dell Inspiron 1525, runs portal just fine the way I bought it. If ram or memory is a problem, game booster can typically clear that up, but I haven't had a problem with it.

Dude my pc is the slowest ever, though I can play portal 1 fine on max setting.I overclocked my pc, used gamebooster, and tried playing it that way, but it still was laggy, and slow on low settings.
I have a an Intel Express 4 series chipset U2700@1.3ghz
